Monthly short-term rental news roundup – June 2019
This month in short-term rental news – More cities choose permits, and how short-term rentals hurt house prices.
Here’s the scoop:
- A bumper crop of STRs gone bad this month. Starting with assault and murder in Charlotte, then a guest using a fake name held a party that trashed and robbed an Arizona apartment, and finally a huge rave in an Atlanta home that caused thousands of dollars in damage. Oh well, better than living next to “the most fun home in Wisconsin”, with loud parties every weekend. Geez, if you can’t trust Trump’s former campaign chair to run an Airbnb legally, who can you trust?
- Who’d want to live next door to all that? That’s exactly why STRs are hurting property values in downtown Melbourne.
- A mix of good laws this month. Noosa Shire looks to ban STRs outside of popular areas and enforce tight rules where they’re allowed. Queenstown chooses just to tax them while Quebec (in Canada, eh) and Cyprus opt for a permit system. Raleigh and Honolulu also put in permits (because it really is the best STR policy), with Raleigh banning whole house rentals entirely in most of the city and Honolulu limiting STRs in the city to 1700 max. New Jersey says no to any STRs in apartment buildings, the strongest stance on this issue we’ve seen yet. Meanwhile in Australia, uh…Victoria asks for two years to evaluate its own weak rules, and there’s still no sign of the new NSW rules. Because when you’re behind the times, going slower is the answer.
